I grew up in San Cristóbal de Las Casas in the state of Chiapas, Mexico and now live in Maryland, where I work for the federal government. I was raised bilingual and bicultural (my father is from Mexico and my mother is from the United States), seemingly on the edge of identities. When I am in Mexico, people ask "¿De dónde eres realmente?" ("Where are you really from?"), given my complexion. When I am in the United States, some people seem surprised at my English, commenting either on how good it is, or remarking that they thought all along they heard the trace of an accent. I grew up in Mexico through the age of 18, when I moved to Ohio for college, though my family still lives in San Cristóbal.
